It is a widespread strategy to empower the women, not the men, if you wish to bring social change to a community. Education will improve, as well as safety, equality, and health. Coletivo Panô is just that philosophy applied to Avenues’ neighboring community Jardim Panorama, a socially vulnerable area. This group of women is willing to fill in the leadership vacuum of their community to achieve one goal: improving their children’s shot at a better future. And the rest will surely follow. They are volunteers and warriors, partnered with other moms from the school, bridging the social and economic gap.

“Our girls become moms too early in life. They have no dreams, except motherhood. Through our work, we’re showing them how to dream of becoming other things as well. I love being a mom, but that can come later”, says Eliana Silva Souza, mother of 3 and a member of Panô. The men weren’t too happy about the group, but the girls kept at it. “I never dreamed of becoming a leader. Now, I dedicate my life to the collective. And I can see my community much more clearly.”
